Recommendation Letters
Objective #3: To write two mock letters of recommendation for two different types of students
Evidence: Posted below, in the PDF icon, are two mock letters of recommendation. Although I was not at my internship during the part of the year where the School Counselor's work on letters of recommendation, I figured this was a valuable skill to learn and practice. I developed this evidence by talking to my supervisor. She showed me four different letters of recommendation she wrote for four different types of students that were apart of her caseload. After reading those letters of recommendation and thinking through the possible kinds of students I could encounter and that I have to write letters of recommendation for, I created two imaginary students. As you'll see below, Nicole (who's letter is on the first page) is an overachieving three sport athlete which made her letter of recommendation easy to write. On the other hand, Joseph (who's letter is on the second page) was not the strongest academic student which made his letter of recommendation more difficult to write.
As a result working on this task, I learned how to write letters of recommendation for a few different types of students. I learned, by looking at my supervisor's actual letters of recommendation, to look for some positives within each student in order to write a good letter; each student is unique in their own way and has their own potential and it is important to acknowledge those strengths while remaining honest about their weaknesses, as well. Since these are mock letters of recommendation, it will obviously be very different when the time comes to write letters for actual students. However, this was a valuable experience as I learned the type of voice a person should have when writing these letters and the kinds of details that should be included.
