College Admissions Packets
Objective #2: To create a packet with all of the ‘need to know’ information about the college admissions process.
Evidence:
Posted below, in the PDF icon, is a packet that I created with all of the ‘need to know’ information about the college admissions process. It includes information on SAT/ACT tests, application terminology, reach versus safety schools, what college’s want to see on a high school transcript, extracurricular activities, the college essay, the Common Application, and letters of recommendation. I based the content of my evidence off of the interactions I had with students at Chariho and the questions they asked. For example, when doing scheduling, a countless number of Juniors attempted to create a schedule for their Senior year that was very light. However, I advised against that and told them that they should continue to push themselves in order to make themselves as marketable as possible to colleges. I also developed the evidence through the various projects I completed and meetings I attended. My supervisor and I pushed in to a classroom to give the Juniors a presentation on the upcoming SAT they were all going to take. After seeing this presentation, I wanted to create my own packet I could distribute to the students to practice for the countless number of presentations that I am going to have to create and present during my career as a School Counselor.
By creating this packet, I learned valuable lessons about how to create informational aids for students. I looked at the current presentation the School Counseling Department at Chariho utilizes for the college admissions process to get an idea of how to create a packet or presentation for a topic like this; what it should look like, what kinds of things are included, and the language that is used, among other things. This kind of presentation, a professional presentation, is much different than the academic presentations that I am used to creating so it was very helpful to have an aid to get myself acclimated. Through my own research, I also learned facts about the college admissions project that I did not previously know. I knew the concept of a reach school and a safety school but I did not know the formal definition of it, as stated by the Princeton Review. In conclusion, creating this packet aided my professional development. I have taken my first steps to developing many more professional presentations and, as I move forward, I will take the skills I learned and apply them in the future.
